FAQs

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a holistic practice that uses essential oils and other plant compounds to balance, harmonize, and protect the body, mind and spirit.  This can be achieved through many different methods which include inhalation and/or skin application.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils come from specialized cells of certain plants.  Essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled or cold-pressed from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant.  These oils are highly concentrated and a small amount will go a long way.

Are there safety concerns when using essential oils?

Yes, see the safety page.

Can essential oils be applied directly to my skin?

Most oils are not recommended to be applied directly to your skin because they are highly concentrated.  Essential oils can cause an allergic reaction or cause sensitization.  This can happen the first time you use an oil, or after many years of using the oil.

Can I take essential oils internally?

It is not recommended to take essential oils internally unless you are under the direct care of a Clinical Aromatherapist or physician who has the experience and knowledge to do this in a safe manner.

Can I use essential oils if I am pregnant?

Yes, but you should proceed with caution. This is a controversial subject due to the lack of research on the use of essential oils during pregnancy.  I do not recommend using essential oils during the first trimester, and recommend using a low dilution (1%) during the second and third trimesters.  There are some oils that are considered to be safe, such as Lavender, Frankincense, and both Roman & German Chamomile.  Some oils that should be avoided during pregnancy include Sage, Aniseed, and Wintergreen.

Can I use essential oils on my children?

Yes essential oils can be used on children, but it is important to use oils safe for their age range.  If your child is under the age of 2 many aromatherapists recommend using hydrosols instead of essential oils.

What are hydrosols?

Hydrosols are aromatic waters with healing benefits that comes from the water that is left after the steam distillation process.  These waters are safe to use on children, animals, and directly on your skin.  They have many of the same health benefits as essential oils, but are gentler on the body.

Can I use essential oils on my pets?

I do not recommend using essential oils directly on pets unless you have consulted with an aromatherapist who is trained in this practice.  It is safe to diffuse around them as long as they are able to get away from the area where diffusing is taking place.
